The online demo of Collaborative Protégé can be launched either by
Java Web Start, as an applet, or using a Protégé client.
It is recommended that you use the Java Web Start launcher or the Protégé client. In case you have difficulties with the Java Web Start,
please try the
Applet demo.
Run Demo using Java Web Start (recommended)

Run Demo using a Protégé client
You can connect using a Protégé client (desktop application) directly to the server. It is very important that the Protégé client has the same version as the Protégé server.
The current Protégé version running on the server is:
Protege 3.4 beta 128.
Please download the above Protégé build from the
Protégé download site.
To connect to the server, start Protégé, go to the
File menu -> Open and then click on the
Server button. In the server panel, type in the
Host machine name:
smi-protege.stanford.edu:5200, then fill in your user name and password and click
OK to connect.
Quick users guide
We developed the Collaborative Protégé as an extension of the existing
Multi-user Protégé system. The
multi-user system is a client-server version of Protégé, which allows multiple clients to connect to a Protégé server and to
browse and edit simultaneously the same ontology. All the changes done by one client are seen immediately by all the other clients.
The server used for this online demonstration is :
smi-protege.stanford.edu:5200
Connecting to the server
After you have clicked on the button from above, you will get the following login window (left image from below):
Please do not change the default value of the
Host Machine Name text field. The correct value for this demo is
smi-protege.stanford.edu:5200.
If you already have a user name and a password, please enter them in the corresponding fields in the
Connect to remote
host window (left image from above) and press the
OK button.
Registering a new user
If you are a new user, please click on the
Register new user button in the
Connect to Remote Host window.
This will pop-up a new window (right image from above).
Fill in the fields and click
OK. If the user name already exists, you will get a warning message and will be asked to
enter a different user name. After successfully creating an account, the new user name and password will be automatically
filled-in in the
Connect to remote Host window. Please click again on
OK to proceed to the next step.
Connecting to a project

the available projects on the server.

Please wait until the project is loaded in the graphical user interface. This may take from some seconds to some minutes
depending on your Internet connection speed.
